Indications

Wool Alcohol (lanolin alcohols) is a waxy substance taken from purified sheep’s wool fat. It is mainly an inactive ingredient used in creams and ointments, where it acts as an emollient (skin softener) and helps oil and water mix. Products containing it are used to soothe and protect dry, rough, chapped or cracked skin, nappy area skin, and mild eczema-prone skin.

How It Works

Wool Alcohol forms a thin, breathable film on the skin that slows water loss and keeps the outer layer soft and supple. It also works as an emulsifier, helping water to be held within oily ointment bases so the product spreads easily and stays stable.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Apply a thin layer of the cream or ointment to clean, dry skin as often as needed, or as directed on the label. It is often best used after bathing or before bed. Wash hands after use unless the hands are being treated.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines are known. If you use other skin medicines on the same area, apply them as your doctor or pharmacist advises, usually allowing some minutes between products.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to wool fat, lanolin or wool alcohols.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds, infected or weeping skin unless advised by a doctor.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people are allergic to lanolin and develop itching, redness, rash or swelling where it is applied (allergic contact dermatitis). Thick ointments may sometimes block pores.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash after use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Skin products with wool alcohol are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. If used on the nipples, wipe off any thick residue before feeding if advised by the product label.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Stop use if irritation or a rash develops.
  • Paraffin-containing ointments can soak into clothing and bedding and make them more flammable; keep away from open flames.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.

Overdose

Overdose is not expected with skin use. If a large amount is swallowed, it may cause stomach upset; seek medical advice.
