Indications

Yellow silk cotton (Cochlospermum religiosum) is a small tree with bright yellow flowers whose gum, known as katira or kathlai gum, is used in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine. The gum is traditionally used as a soothing and cooling agent in combination products for acidity, stomach irritation and ulcers, as well as for dry cough, throat irritation and mild bowel complaints. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for stomach ulcers or any other disease.

How It Works

The gum swells in water to form a thick, slippery gel. This gel is thought to coat and protect irritated linings of the throat, stomach and bowel (a demulcent effect), and its bulk can help regulate bowel movements. The plant also contains natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies.

Dosage and Administration

It is used as part of combined Unani products. Take only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Products containing swelling gums should be taken with a full glass of water and not just before lying down, to avoid the gum swelling in the throat.

Interactions

Gums that form a gel can slow or reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time, so take other medicines at least 2 hours apart. People taking diabetes medicines should watch their blood sugar, as soluble fibres can slightly change sugar absorption. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to the plant gum or any other ingredient.
  • Difficulty swallowing, narrowing of the food pipe or bowel, or bowel obstruction.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Bloating, wind, tummy discomfort or allergic reactions may occur.

Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, choking or difficulty swallowing after taking it, severe tummy pain with no bowel movement, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little safety information on its use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ask a doctor before using herbal combination products at these times.

Precautions and Warnings

Stomach pain, ongoing heartburn, or ulcer symptoms need a doctor’s assessment, as tests and medicines for Helicobacter pylori infection or acid reduction may be needed. Seek care promptly if you are over 40 with new indigestion, weight loss or difficulty swallowing.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause bloating, wind and, if not taken with enough water, a risk of blockage. Seek medical advice and take the pack with you.
