Indications
Zinc Pyrithione is an anti-dandruff and anti-fungal ingredient, mainly used in shampoos and scalp products. It helps control dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp, a common condition that causes flaking, itching and redness. It is sometimes used in skin washes for similar flaky skin conditions.
How It Works
Dandruff is linked to the overgrowth of a yeast called Malassezia that lives naturally on the scalp. Zinc Pyrithione slows the growth of this yeast and some bacteria, and also helps slow the over-rapid shedding of scalp skin cells. This reduces flakes, itching and irritation.
Dosage and Administration
For external use only. Wet the hair, apply enough shampoo to make a lather, massage it into the scalp, leave it on for about 3 to 5 minutes and rinse well. Use it 2 to 3 times a week, or as directed on the label. Once dandruff is controlled, using it once a week may be enough. Avoid contact with the eyes.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are known. Avoid using it at the same time as other strong scalp treatments unless advised, as this may increase irritation.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Zinc Pyrithione or any ingredient
- Broken, raw or infected skin on the scalp
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may notice scalp dryness, mild burning, itching or redness, or hair that feels dry or slightly discoloured. Allergic contact dermatitis is uncommon.
Get urgent medical help if you develop a severe rash, blistering, swelling of the face or eyes, or difficulty breathing after use. If the product gets into the eyes and causes severe pain or blurred vision, rinse well with water and see a doctor.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed through the scalp, and occasional use as a shampoo is generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Rinse well and ask a doctor if you need to use it often or on large areas.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use only; do not swallow. Keep away from the eyes. Stop use if irritation persists. If the scalp does not improve after a few weeks, or if there is heavy scaling, thick crusts, hair loss or pain, see a doctor. Some regulators have restricted Zinc Pyrithione in cosmetic products as a precaution, so use it only as directed.
Overdose
Overuse on the scalp may cause dryness and irritation. If swallowed, it may cause nausea, vomiting or stomach upset; rinse the mouth and seek medical advice, especially for a child.
