Sodium Diacetate
Indications
Sodium Diacetate is a feed additive used in animals, mainly poultry and livestock. It is mixed into feed to prevent the growth of moulds and some bacteria, keeping feed fresh during storage, and to act as a mild acidifier that supports healthy digestion. It is also an approved preservative in some human foods (food additive E262), but the products in this listing are for veterinary and farm use and are not for human use.
How It Works
Sodium Diacetate is a combination of sodium acetate and acetic acid (the acid in vinegar). In moist feed it releases acetic acid, which enters mould and bacterial cells and disturbs their metabolism, stopping them from growing. Lowering the acidity of feed and the upper gut may also reduce harmful bacteria and help feed use.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a veterinarian or animal nutritionist. It is usually mixed evenly into feed at the rate stated on the pack, which depends on the type of feed, moisture and storage time. Mix thoroughly so that it is spread evenly through the feed.
Interactions
It can be used with most feed ingredients. Avoid mixing it directly with concentrated alkaline products. Ask a veterinarian before combining it with other acidifiers or medicated feeds, to avoid making the feed too acidic.
Contraindications
- Not for human use as a medicine.
- Do not use in animals with known sensitivity to the product.
- Do not use at rates higher than recommended.
Side Effects
At recommended levels it is well tolerated by animals. Too much may reduce feed intake because of the sour taste, or cause loose droppings. In people handling the powder, it may irritate the eyes, skin and nose.
For the handler, get urgent medical help if powder causes severe eye pain or vision changes after rinsing, or difficulty breathing after inhaling dust. For animals, contact a veterinarian if they stop eating or become unwell.
Pregnancy and Lactation
No special restrictions are known for breeding or laying animals at recommended rates; follow the label. Pregnant or breastfeeding people handling the product should simply avoid breathing the dust and wash hands after use.
Precautions and Warnings
Wear gloves, a dust mask and eye protection when handling the concentrated powder. Wash hands after use. Follow any withdrawal period stated on the label before slaughter or use of eggs or milk; for feed preservatives none is usually needed, but always check. Store away from human food.
Overdose
Excess in feed may cause poor appetite and digestive upset in animals: return to the normal rate and consult a veterinarian. If a person swallows a large amount, rinse the mouth, drink water and seek medical advice.
Therapeutic Class
Veterinary feed additive (preservative, mould inhibitor and acidifier).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bag tightly closed, as the product absorbs moisture.
