Habb-E Suranjan
Indications
Habb-e Suranjan is a Unani herbal pill whose main ingredient is Suranjan (the dried corm of Colchicum, autumn crocus), usually combined with other herbs. It is traditionally used for joint pain and swelling, gout, sciatica, back pain and other rheumatic complaints. Scientific evidence for these traditional uses is limited, and it should not replace proper medical treatment.
How It Works
Suranjan naturally contains colchicine, a potent substance that reduces inflammation by blocking the movement of white blood cells into inflamed joints. This is why it is traditionally used in gout and joint pain. Other herbs in the formula are believed to support digestion and help the body clear waste, although this has not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually a small number of pills after meals with water, for a limited period. Do not exceed the stated dose, because Colchicum is potent and too much can be poisonous. Not for children unless a practitioner advises it.
Interactions
- Colchicine-containing medicines: do not combine, as the effects add up.
- Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Ritonavir, Verapamil, Diltiazem and Cyclosporine: can raise colchicine levels and cause serious toxicity.
- Statins such as Atorvastatin and Simvastatin, and Fibrates: higher risk of muscle damage.
- Grapefruit juice: may increase toxicity.
- Tell your doctor about all other medicines before use.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Children, unless prescribed by a practitioner.
- Kidney or liver disease.
- Blood disorders or bone marrow problems.
- Severe stomach or bowel disease.
- Allergy to any ingredient.
Side Effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain are the most common effects and may be early signs of too high a dose. Long use may cause muscle weakness, numbness or tingling, hair loss and low blood counts.
Get urgent medical help if you have severe diarrhoea or vomiting, muscle pain or weakness, unusual bleeding or bruising, fever or sore throat, numbness in the hands or feet, very little urine, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking it straight away.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as Colchicum can harm the baby.
Precautions and Warnings
Use only under the guidance of a registered practitioner and tell your doctor you are taking it. Older people and those with kidney or liver problems are at higher risk of toxicity. If gout or joint pain persists, see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. Keep out of the reach of children, as accidental swallowing can be dangerous.
Overdose
Colchicum overdose is serious and can be fatal. Early signs are burning in the mouth and throat, severe vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain, followed by dehydration, bleeding, organ failure and collapse. Seek emergency medical help immediately even if the person feels well at first.
