About the Medicine

Sharbat Buzuri

Indications

Sharbat Buzuri is a traditional Unani syrup made mainly from a blend of seeds (buzur means seeds), such as cucumber, melon, fennel and chicory seeds, in a sugar base. It is traditionally used as a diuretic (a medicine that increases urine flow) for burning or painful urination, scanty urine, and to help flush small kidney or urinary stones and gravel. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

In Unani tradition the seeds are described as cooling and diuretic. Increasing the flow of urine may help wash out the urinary tract and ease burning. It does not kill bacteria and does not dissolve large stones.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually diluted in a glass of water. Drink plenty of water during use unless a doctor has told you to limit fluids.

Interactions

Taking it with other diuretics such as Furosemide or Hydrochlorothiazide, or with Lithium, may increase fluid and salt loss or change Lithium levels. Ask a doctor first. The sugar content matters for people taking medicines for diabetes.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • People with diabetes should not use sugar-based syrups unless a doctor agrees.
  • People told to restrict fluids, such as those with heart failure or advanced kidney disease.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible effects include increased urination, mild stomach upset and, rarely, allergic reactions. The sugar can raise blood sugar.

Get urgent medical help if you have fever with back or side pain, blood in the urine, severe pain, inability to pass urine, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Urinary infections in pregnancy need proper medical treatment, so see a doctor rather than using herbal syrups.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Burning urination is often caused by a urinary tract infection, which may need antibiotics. See a doctor if symptoms last more than 2 days or keep coming back.
  • Large kidney stones need medical assessment.
  • Give to children only on medical advice.

Overdose

Too much may cause frequent urination, dehydration or stomach upset. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation (diuretic syrup).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children.
