Andrographis Paniculata
Indications
Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh, "king of bitters") is a bitter herb used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine. Preparations are traditionally used to ease symptoms of the common cold, sore throat and fever, to support liver function and digestion, and to improve appetite. Some studies suggest it may shorten or ease cold symptoms, but scientific evidence is limited and it is not a treatment for serious infections or liver disease.
How It Works
Its main active compounds, called andrographolides, are thought to reduce inflammation, support the immune response and protect liver cells. The bitter taste also stimulates digestive juices.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Tablets, capsules or syrup are usually taken 2 to 3 times a day after meals. For colds, it is generally used for short courses of up to about 1 to 2 weeks. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Interactions
It may add to the effect of blood pressure medicines, blood thinners (for example Warfarin, Clopidogrel, Aspirin) and diabetes medicines. It may reduce the effect of medicines that suppress the immune system (for example Ciclosporin, Tacrolimus). Ask your doctor if you take any of these.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy, or trying to become pregnant
- Allergy to Andrographis or plants of the same family
- Bleeding disorders or within 2 weeks before surgery
- Autoimmune diseases (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis), unless advised by a doctor
Side Effects
Possible effects include bitter taste, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach upset, headache and tiredness.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, yellow skin or eyes, or unusual bleeding.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, as it has been linked with harm to pregnancy in animal studies and traditionally is avoided. Safety in breastfeeding is not known; avoid use.
Precautions and Warnings
See a doctor if fever lasts more than 3 days, is very high, or comes with breathlessness, rash or severe weakness, as conditions such as dengue, typhoid or pneumonia need proper testing. Tell your doctor about low blood pressure, diabetes or fertility plans. Not recommended for young children unless advised by a practitioner.
Overdose
High doses may cause severe stomach upset, vomiting and diarrhoea, and may affect blood pressure. Seek medical advice.
