About the Medicine

Amlexanox

Indications

Amlexanox is used as an oral paste to treat recurrent aphthous ulcers (common painful mouth ulcers or canker sores) in adults and adolescents with normal immune systems. It helps the ulcers heal faster and reduces pain.

How It Works

Amlexanox reduces inflammation and allergic reactions in the lining of the mouth by stopping certain cells from releasing histamine and other chemicals that cause swelling and pain. This speeds up healing of the ulcer.

Dosage and Administration

Start as soon as you notice an ulcer. Dry the area gently, squeeze about 0.5 cm of paste onto a clean fingertip and dab it onto each ulcer. Use 4 times a day, after breakfast, lunch and dinner and at bedtime, after brushing and rinsing the mouth. Wash your hands afterwards. Continue until the ulcer heals; see a doctor or dentist if it has not healed or the pain has not improved after 10 days.

Interactions

No important interactions with other medicines are known.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Amlexanox or any ingredient of the paste.

Side Effects

  • Brief stinging, burning or pain at the application site
  • Rarely, diarrhoea or nausea
  • Rarely, mouth irritation or rash

Get urgent medical help if you notice a widespread rash, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is limited information. Use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding only if a doctor or dentist advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

Avoid getting the paste in your eyes; if you do, rinse them with water. A mouth ulcer that lasts longer than 2 to 3 weeks, keeps coming back often, or occurs with fever, weight loss or other symptoms needs to be checked by a doctor or dentist, as it may have another cause.

Overdose

Swallowing a small amount is unlikely to be harmful; it may cause stomach upset. If a large amount is swallowed, seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Oral anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agent (mouth ulcer treatment).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Replace the cap after use.
