6 Essential Nutrients with Omega-3
Indications
This is an eye-health supplement that combines six nutrients (usually Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Copper, Lutein and Zeaxanthin) with Omega-3 fatty acids. It is based on large eye studies and is used mainly by adults with intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that damages central vision, to help slow its progression. It is not a cure and does not restore lost vision.
How It Works
Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that help protect cells in the retina from damage. Zinc supports enzymes in the eye, and Copper is added because long-term Zinc can lower copper levels. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are yellow plant pigments that collect in the macula (the centre of the retina) and help filter harmful blue light. Omega-3 fatty acids support cell membranes, although studies did not show that adding them gave extra benefit for AMD.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your eye doctor, usually 1 or 2 capsules a day with food. It is meant for long-term daily use. Do not take extra zinc, vitamin or fish oil supplements at the same time without advice.
Interactions
- Zinc and Copper can reduce absorption of some antibiotics (Tetracyclines, Ciprofloxacin and similar) and Penicillamine; take them at least 2 hours apart.
- High-dose Vitamin E and Omega-3 may add to the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel or Aspirin.
- Tell your doctor about any other supplements you take.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient, including fish or shellfish if the Omega-3 comes from fish oil. It is not intended for children.
Side Effects
- Stomach upset, nausea or indigestion
- Fishy aftertaste or burping
- Mild yellowing of the skin with high Lutein intake (harmless)
Get urgent medical help if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This high-strength formula is designed for older adults with AMD and is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use a supplement made for pregnancy if needed.
Precautions and Warnings
- Have regular eye check-ups; report any sudden change in vision, such as straight lines looking wavy, without delay.
- Use with caution if you have a bleeding disorder or are due for surgery.
- Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease.
Overdose
Taking much more than directed can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea, mainly from zinc. Long-term excess zinc can cause copper deficiency and anaemia. Seek medical advice.
