Indications

Super antioxidant vitamin and mineral tablets are dietary supplements that combine antioxidant nutrients, typically beta-carotene (a source of vitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, selenium and sometimes copper, manganese or other trace minerals, depending on the product. They are used to help meet daily needs for these nutrients, to support general health and immunity in people with a poor diet, during recovery from illness, and in older adults. Some formulas are designed to support eye health. They are not a treatment for any disease.

How It Works

The body produces unstable molecules called free radicals during normal metabolism, and more with smoking, pollution and illness. Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and beta-carotene help neutralise free radicals. Zinc, selenium, copper and manganese are needed by the body's own antioxidant enzymes. Together these nutrients also support the immune system, skin, eyes and wound healing.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually one tablet or capsule a day, or as directed on the label or by a doctor. Take it with or after a meal and a glass of water to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Do not take more than the recommended amount, and avoid taking it together with other supplements that contain the same vitamins and minerals unless a doctor advises. Not intended for children unless the label says so.

Interactions

• Zinc, copper and other minerals can reduce absorption of Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin and Levothyroxine; take these medicines at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after the supplement.
• High doses of vitamin E may increase the bleeding effect of Warfarin and other blood thinners.
• Vitamin A from other sources (including Isotretinoin or Acitretin) adds to total vitamin A intake.
• Orlistat and some cholesterol medicines can reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Contraindications

• Allergy to any ingredient.
• Excess vitamin A or high blood calcium, or conditions where the label states it should not be used.
• Wilson's disease (if the product contains copper).
• High-dose beta-carotene products are not advised for current smokers or people recently exposed to asbestos.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon at recommended doses. Some people get mild nausea, stomach upset, a metallic taste, constipation or diarrhoea, especially on an empty stomach. Beta-carotene may cause harmless yellowing of the skin at high intake. Urine may turn bright yellow because of B vitamins, if present.

Rarely, allergic reactions occur. Long-term use above recommended amounts can cause vitamin A or mineral toxicity.

Get urgent medical help if you have a severe rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or if a child accidentally swallows several tablets.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Pregnant women should not take high doses of vitamin A, as it can harm the baby. Use a supplement made for pregnancy unless your doctor advises this product. During breastfeeding, standard doses are generally acceptable; ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

Precautions and Warnings

Supplements do not replace a balanced diet. Tell your doctor if you smoke, have kidney or liver disease, or take regular medicines. Store away from children: products containing minerals can be harmful in overdose. Check the label for the exact contents, which differ between products.

Overdose

Taking many tablets at once may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. Very large or long-term overdoses can cause vitamin A toxicity (headache, liver damage) or selenium toxicity (hair and nail loss, garlic breath). Contact a doctor or poison centre.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light, with the container tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
