Nabayas Louha Herbal Haematinic
Indications
Nabayas Louha (Navayasa Lauha) is a classical Ayurvedic iron preparation. It is traditionally used as a herbal haematinic, meaning a product that supports the making of red blood cells, in people with anaemia (a low level of red blood cells or haemoglobin) and related tiredness, weakness and paleness. It is also traditionally used for poor appetite and sluggish digestion. Scientific evidence for the whole formula is limited, so it should not replace proper testing and treatment of the cause of anaemia.
How It Works
The preparation combines a processed iron ash (Lauha Bhasma) with herbs such as Trikatu (black pepper, long pepper and ginger), Triphala (three fruits), Musta, Vidanga and Chitraka. The iron part can help the body replace iron stores used to make haemoglobin. The herbs are traditionally believed to improve digestion and absorption. How well the iron in this form is absorbed has not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken after meals with water, honey or as advised. Do not take more than the recommended amount. Children should only take it on the advice of a practitioner, because iron overdose is dangerous for children.
Interactions
- Iron can reduce the absorption of antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin, and of Levothyroxine. Keep at least 2 hours between them.
- Antacids, calcium supplements, tea and coffee can reduce iron absorption.
- Do not combine with other iron supplements unless advised, to avoid taking too much iron.
- Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take, especially if you take blood thinners or diabetes medicines.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
- Conditions with too much iron in the body, such as haemochromatosis or repeated blood transfusions.
- Anaemia not caused by iron deficiency (for example thalassaemia), unless a doctor advises it.
- Active stomach ulcer.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include stomach upset, nausea, constipation or loose stools, a burning feeling in the stomach and dark or black stools (black stools from iron are usually harmless).
Get urgent medical help if you have black tarry stools with stomach pain, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, rash or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Iron needs rise in pregnancy, but the safety of this herbal iron mixture in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Use only if a doctor advises it, and prefer standard iron supplements that have been tested in pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
- Find out the cause of anaemia first. Anaemia can come from blood loss, worms, thalassaemia or other illnesses that need specific treatment.
- Some Ayurvedic metal preparations have been found to contain heavy metals. Buy only from trusted, licensed makers.
- Keep out of reach of children: iron tablets can be fatal to young children.
- Use with care if you have liver disease or stomach problems.
Overdose
Taking too much iron can cause vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, shock and liver damage, especially in children. If someone, particularly a child, swallows a large amount, get emergency medical help at once even if they seem well.
