About the Medicine

Compound Asparagus

Indications

Compound Asparagus is a herbal preparation based on Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus root), often combined with other herbs. It is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani practice as a general tonic for women, to support breast milk production after childbirth, for menstrual discomfort, for weakness and tiredness, and for mild acidity. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for any disease.

How It Works

Shatavari root contains natural plant compounds called saponins (shatavarins), along with other substances. These are believed to have mild hormone-like, soothing and nourishing effects. Some small studies suggest it may help milk supply and calm the stomach lining, but the exact effects in people are not well proven.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. It is usually taken once or twice a day, with water or milk, after meals. Do not take more than the recommended amount.

Interactions

  • Shatavari may have a mild water-tablet (diuretic) effect, so use with care with Furosemide, Lithium and similar medicines.
  • It may lower blood sugar slightly; monitor sugar if you take diabetes medicines.
  • Because of possible hormone-like effects, ask your doctor before using with hormone treatments or birth control pills.
  • Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to asparagus or any ingredient.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, endometriosis or fibroids, unless a doctor approves.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have stomach upset, loose stools, weight gain, a blocked nose or an allergic skin rash.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, widespread rash or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Shatavari is traditionally used after childbirth to support breastfeeding, but its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been properly tested. Do not use during pregnancy unless your doctor advises it. If breastfeeding, use only with a doctor's advice.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not use it to treat heavy bleeding, low milk supply or ongoing weakness without seeing a doctor, as these can have serious causes.
  • Use with care if you have kidney problems or take water tablets.
  • Children should take it only on a practitioner's advice.
  • Buy only from trusted, licensed makers.

Overdose

No specific overdose effects are well known. Taking too much may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea. If a large amount is swallowed, or if someone feels unwell, seek medical advice.
