Herbal Cough Syrup [Sharbat Tulsi]
Indications
Sharbat Tulsi is a Unani herbal cough syrup based on holy basil (Tulsi, Ocimum sanctum), usually combined with other traditional herbs and a sweet syrup base. It is traditionally used to soothe dry and wet cough, sore throat, mild chest congestion and symptoms of the common cold. Scientific evidence is limited, and it is not a treatment for serious chest infections or asthma.
How It Works
Tulsi and the other herbs are thought to have mild soothing, expectorant (helping to loosen mucus) and anti-inflammatory effects. The thick syrup coats the throat and may ease irritation that triggers coughing.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. It is usually taken 2 to 3 times a day, with a smaller amount for children. Shake well before use and use the measuring cup provided. If the cough lasts more than a week, see a doctor.
Interactions
Tulsi may slightly lower blood sugar and slow blood clotting, so take care with diabetes medicines and blood thinners such as Warfarin. Check the label: some herbal cough syrups contain other potent herbs that may interact with medicines.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Tulsi or any ingredient
- Children under 1 year, unless advised by a doctor
- Uncontrolled diabetes (because of the sugar content), unless a sugar-free form is used
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea or loose stools may occur.
Get urgent medical help if there is difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest pain, high fever, coughing up blood, or swelling of the face and lips. A child with fast breathing or chest indrawing needs urgent medical care.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well studied. Medicinal amounts of Tulsi are best avoided in pregnancy; ask your doctor before use.
Precautions and Warnings
People with diabetes should note the sugar content. See a doctor for cough lasting longer than 1 to 2 weeks, cough with fever, breathlessness or weight loss, as these may need tests for conditions such as pneumonia or tuberculosis.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea and, in people with diabetes, raised blood sugar. Seek medical advice if a large amount is swallowed by a child.
Therapeutic Class
