Habb-E Azaraqi
Indications
Habb-e Azaraqi is a Unani pill whose main ingredient is purified Azaraqi (Kuchla, the seed of Strychnos nux-vomica), usually with warming spices such as black pepper. It is traditionally used for weakness of the nerves, numbness, facial palsy and other forms of paralysis, joint and back pain, and general or sexual weakness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. It is a potent preparation and must not be used for self-treatment of serious conditions such as stroke.
How It Works
Nux-vomica seeds contain Strychnine and Brucine, natural substances that stimulate the nerves and spinal cord. In Unani practice the seeds are first purified (detoxified) to lower their strength. In small amounts they are believed to act as a nerve tonic; in larger amounts Strychnine is a dangerous poison that causes muscle spasms and seizures.
Dosage and Administration
Use only as directed by a registered Unani practitioner or exactly as on the label. Never take more than the stated dose, never take it for longer than advised, and do not combine it with any other product that contains Kuchla or nux-vomica.
Interactions
- Do not combine with other nerve stimulants, including other nux-vomica products, or with large amounts of caffeine.
- Medicines that lower the seizure threshold, such as Tramadol, Bupropion and some antidepressants, may add to the risk of fits.
- Tell your doctor about this product before any surgery or new medicine.
Contraindications
- Epilepsy or any history of seizures (fits).
- High blood pressure, heart disease or an overactive thyroid.
- Liver disease.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children.
- Allergy to any ingredient.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include restlessness, anxiety, stiffness or twitching of muscles, headache, dizziness, stomach upset and trouble sleeping.
Get urgent medical help at once if there is muscle stiffness or spasms, jaw tightness, jerking movements, a fit (seizure), severe agitation or difficulty breathing. These can be signs of strychnine poisoning.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Strychnine is toxic and its safety for the unborn baby or nursing infant is unknown.
Precautions and Warnings
- This is a potent preparation with a narrow safety margin. Follow the dose exactly.
- Do not use for sudden weakness, numbness or facial drooping: these can be signs of a stroke and need emergency care.
- Buy only from trusted, licensed makers; poorly purified seeds can be very toxic.
- Keep well out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose can cause strychnine poisoning: painful muscle spasms, arching of the back, rigid jaw, seizures and breathing failure, which can be fatal. Call emergency services or go to hospital immediately. Keep the person calm in a quiet, dim place on the way.
Therapeutic Class
Unani herbal preparation (nerve tonic).
