About the Medicine

Baloxavir Marboxil

Indications

Baloxavir Marboxil is an antiviral medicine used to treat influenza (flu) caused by influenza A or B viruses in people who have had symptoms for no more than 48 hours. It may also be used to prevent flu after close contact with someone who has flu, as advised by a doctor. It does not treat the common cold, COVID-19 or bacterial infections, and it does not replace the yearly flu vaccine.

How It Works

To multiply, the flu virus needs to copy its genetic material using an enzyme called cap-dependent endonuclease. Baloxavir is changed in the body to its active form, which blocks this enzyme. This stops the virus from multiplying, which helps symptoms settle sooner and reduces the amount of virus a person spreads.

Dosage and Administration

Baloxavir is taken as a single dose only. The usual dose for adults and children aged 12 years and over is 40 mg for those weighing 40 to under 80 kg, and 80 mg for those weighing 80 kg or more. Take it as soon as possible after flu symptoms start, within 48 hours. It can be taken with or without food, but not with dairy products, calcium-fortified drinks or supplements containing calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc or selenium. Younger children: only as prescribed.

Interactions

Antacids, laxatives, milk and dairy foods, and supplements containing calcium, aluminium, iron, magnesium, zinc or selenium bind baloxavir and reduce its effect; avoid taking them at the same time. Baloxavir may reduce the effect of live nasal flu vaccine if given within 2 weeks; injected flu vaccines are not affected.

Contraindications

Do not use baloxavir if you are allergic to baloxavir marboxil or any ingredient of the tablet.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon and usually mild. They include diarrhoea, nausea, headache and bronchitis-like symptoms. Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or hives can occur. Some people with flu, especially children, may have unusual behaviour or confusion, which can be caused by the flu itself.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), bloody diarrhoea, or if flu symptoms become severe, such as trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion or symptoms that improve and then come back worse.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Your doctor will decide whether baloxavir or another flu medicine is more suitable. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Baloxavir works best when started early. Bacterial infections can occur together with flu or mimic flu, so see a doctor if you are not improving. People at high risk of flu complications (older people, those with chronic heart, lung or kidney disease, or a weak immune system) should seek medical care promptly.

Overdose

There is little experience with overdose. If too much has been taken, seek medical advice; treatment is supportive.
