About the Medicine

Bandish [Oak Galls, Tannic Acid]

Indications

This Unani preparation is based on oak galls (mazu), the hard growths that form on the twigs of the oak tree Quercus infectoria, which are naturally very rich in tannic acid. It is traditionally used as an astringent, a substance that tightens and dries tissues, for loose motions, excessive white vaginal discharge (leucorrhoea), and bleeding or spongy gums. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for any disease.

How It Works

Tannic acid binds to proteins on the surface of the skin, gums and lining of the gut. This forms a thin protective layer, tightens the tissue and reduces oozing, bleeding and fluid loss. Tannins also have some mild antimicrobial activity.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Use it only for short periods unless a practitioner advises otherwise. Do not give to children unless a practitioner advises it.

Interactions

Tannins can bind to iron, other minerals and many medicines in the gut and reduce how much is absorbed. Take this product at least 2 hours apart from iron tablets, other supplements and your regular medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to oak galls or tannins.
  • Constipation or bowel blockage.
  • Liver disease, as large amounts of tannic acid may harm the liver.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include constipation, stomach upset, nausea and a dry feeling in the mouth. Long-term use of large amounts may reduce iron absorption and, rarely, affect the liver or kidneys.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe stomach pain.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

Diarrhoea with blood, high fever or signs of dehydration needs a doctor, and oral rehydration solution remains the most important treatment for loose motions. Vaginal discharge that is smelly, itchy, coloured or comes with pain or fever may be an infection that needs proper treatment. Bleeding gums should be checked by a dentist.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause vomiting, severe constipation, stomach pain and possible liver damage. Seek medical help if much more than the label amount has been taken.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation (astringent).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
