Herbal Cough Syrup [Vasakarista]
Indications
Vasakarista is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal cough syrup made mainly from Vasaka (Malabar nut, Adhatoda vasica) leaves with other herbs. It is used to relieve cough, loosen and bring up thick phlegm, and ease chest congestion in colds, sore throat and bronchitis.
How It Works
Vasaka contains natural plant compounds (such as vasicine) that thin mucus so it is easier to cough up and may help open the airways. The other herbs in the syrup are traditionally used to soothe the throat and calm coughing.
Dosage and Administration
Follow the pack label, as the strength differs between products. Adults commonly take 2 teaspoons (10 ml) two or three times a day after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water if the label says so. Children should only take it at the dose on the label or as advised by a doctor. Shake well before use.
Interactions
No important interactions are well known. Some traditional syrups contain sugar and a small amount of natural alcohol from fermentation, so take care if you have diabetes or take medicines that react with alcohol, such as Metronidazole. Ask a pharmacist before using it with other cough or cold medicines.
Contraindications
Allergy to any ingredient; pregnancy (Vasaka is traditionally avoided in pregnancy).
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Occasionally nausea, stomach upset or loose stools. Get urgent medical help if you have trouble breathing, wheezing that gets worse, swelling of the face or throat, coughing up blood, a high fever, or chest pain. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than 3 weeks.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, use only if a doctor advises, as safety information is limited.
Precautions and Warnings
Herbal does not always mean harmless. People with diabetes should check the sugar content. Do not use it for long periods without advice. A cough with fever, weight loss or night sweats needs a doctor's check, as it may be a sign of infection such as tuberculosis.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Seek medical advice, especially if a child has taken a large amount.
Therapeutic Class
Herbal (Ayurvedic) cough preparation, expectorant.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
