Benzydamine Hydrochloride
Indications
Benzydamine Hydrochloride is used as a mouthwash, gargle or throat spray to relieve pain, soreness and swelling in the mouth and throat. Uses include sore throat, mouth ulcers, inflamed gums (gingivitis), soreness after dental treatment or tonsil surgery, and painful mouth inflammation (mucositis) caused by radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
How It Works
Benzydamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine that works locally where it is applied. It reduces inflammation and swelling, and it also has a mild numbing (local anaesthetic) effect, so pain and discomfort ease quickly.
Dosage and Administration
Mouthwash or gargle: adults usually rinse or gargle with about 15 ml every 1.5 to 3 hours as needed, for about 20 to 30 seconds, and then spit it out. If stinging occurs, it can be diluted with an equal amount of water. Spray: use as directed on the label. Do not swallow. Children's use and use for radiotherapy mucositis should follow the doctor's or label directions. Do not use for more than 7 days without medical advice.
Interactions
Because very little is absorbed into the body, interactions with other medicines are unlikely. Avoid using other mouthwashes at the same time unless advised.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to Benzydamine. People who have had asthma or allergic reactions to Aspirin or other NSAIDs should use it only with medical advice.
Side Effects
The most common effects are numbness or stinging in the mouth, which usually pass quickly. Dry mouth, a burning feeling, thirst or a change in taste may occur. Rarely, skin rash, itching or sensitivity to light can happen.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash. Also see a doctor if the sore throat is severe, comes with high fever, or does not improve within a few days.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Only small amounts are absorbed, but it should be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding only if advised by a doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions and Warnings
Some products contain alcohol; avoid swallowing them and take care in children. Use with care if you have asthma or a history of allergy to painkillers. If mouth sores or throat pain last more than a week, see a doctor to rule out other causes.
Overdose
Accidentally swallowing a large amount, especially by a child, may cause vomiting, stomach upset, restlessness, drowsiness or, rarely, seizures. Contact a doctor or the nearest hospital.
Therapeutic Class
Local anti-inflammatory and analgesic for the mouth and throat (NSAID).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
