About the Medicine

Inhaler Device

Indications

An inhaler device is used to take inhaled medicines for asthma and COPD (long-term lung disease that makes breathing difficult). Most devices in this group are reusable dry powder inhalers for capsules: you put a capsule of inhalation powder into the device, the device pierces it, and you breathe the powder in. The device itself contains no medicine.

How It Works

When the capsule is pierced, a quick, deep breath through the mouthpiece lifts the powder out and carries it into the lungs. The medicine works directly in the airways, so a small dose is enough and less of it reaches the rest of the body.

Dosage and Administration

Take the number of doses your doctor prescribed. How to use a capsule inhaler:

  • Wash and dry your hands. Open the device and place one capsule in the chamber.
  • Close it and press the button once to pierce the capsule.
  • Breathe out fully, away from the mouthpiece.
  • Seal your lips around the mouthpiece and breathe in quickly and deeply. You may hear the capsule rattle.
  • Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
  • Check the capsule. If powder is left, inhale again. Throw the empty capsule away.
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit after using a steroid inhaler.

Ask your pharmacist or doctor to check your technique.

Interactions

The device does not interact with medicines. Use only capsules made for inhalation and suited to this type of device. Inhalation capsules must never be swallowed, as they will not work that way.

Contraindications

A capsule inhaler is not suitable for people who cannot breathe in strongly, such as young children or anyone having a severe attack. They may need a pressurised inhaler with a spacer, or a nebuliser. Do not use a medicine you are allergic to.

Side Effects

The device itself has no side effects, but the powder can cause coughing or throat irritation. Any other side effects come from the medicine in the capsule.

Get urgent medical help if breathing does not improve after your reliever, your lips turn blue or grey, you cannot speak in full sentences, or wheezing suddenly gets worse straight after inhaling.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The device is safe to use. Keeping asthma well controlled is important for both mother and baby, so do not stop prescribed inhalers without talking to your doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Never breathe out into the device; moisture makes the powder clump.
  • Clean it regularly as the leaflet says, usually with a dry cloth or brush. If it is washed, let it dry fully before use.
  • Replace the device as the maker advises, or if it is cracked or the piercing button does not work.
  • Use your own device only.

Overdose

The device cannot cause an overdose. Taking more doses of a reliever medicine than prescribed can cause shaking and a fast heartbeat; seek medical advice.
