Collagen II & GAGs
Indications
Collagen II with GAGs is a joint-support supplement that combines type II collagen (the main protein of joint cartilage, usually from chicken sternum) with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as Chondroitin sulfate and Hyaluronic acid. It is used to support joint comfort and movement in people with osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis), joint stiffness from ageing, or heavy joint use. Some studies suggest a modest improvement in joint pain and stiffness, but results vary and it does not rebuild damaged cartilage.
How It Works
Undenatured (native) type II collagen is thought to work through the gut immune system, teaching the body to calm the inflammation that attacks its own cartilage (a process called oral tolerance). GAGs are natural building blocks of cartilage and joint fluid: they hold water, cushion the joint and help keep the joint fluid slippery. Benefits usually take several weeks to appear.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually once a day. Undenatured collagen products are often taken on an empty stomach, for example at bedtime, but follow the pack instructions. Use for at least 8 to 12 weeks before judging the effect.
Interactions
- Chondroitin may slightly increase the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin; get your INR checked if you start or stop it.
- Take care if you also use Aspirin, Clopidogrel or other medicines that affect bleeding.
- No other important interactions are well known.
Contraindications
- Allergy to chicken, egg, fish or shellfish, depending on the source of the collagen and GAGs (check the label).
- Allergy to any other ingredient.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, constipation or headache may occur.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, hives or difficulty breathing, or if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising while on blood thinners.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough information on its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid use unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- A hot, red, very swollen joint, or joint pain with fever, needs a doctor; it may be an infection or gout.
- Supplements do not replace weight control, exercise and prescribed treatment for arthritis.
- People with asthma or bleeding disorders should ask a doctor before using chondroitin-containing products.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to be serious. Taking too much may cause stomach upset. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken or a child swallows it.
