Bisoprolol Hemifumarate
What It Is Used For
Bisoprolol is a beta-blocker. It slows the heart and lowers blood pressure. It is used for high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), and long-term heart failure.
How to Take It
For blood pressure or angina: usually 5 mg once a day in the morning (range 2.5 mg to 10 mg). For heart failure the doctor starts with 1.25 mg and increases very slowly. Swallow with water, with or without food. Do not stop suddenly: chest pain or heart problems can get worse. Your doctor will reduce the dose slowly if it needs to stop.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not take it if you have severe asthma, a very slow heart rate, certain heart rhythm blocks, heart failure that has suddenly worsened, shock, severe circulation problems in the hands and feet, or an untreated adrenal tumour (phaeochromocytoma).
Side Effects
Common: tiredness, dizziness, cold hands and feet, slow pulse, nausea and diarrhoea. Less common: sleep problems, low mood and breathlessness in people with lung disease.
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have asthma or COPD, diabetes (it can hide signs of low sugar), thyroid disease or psoriasis, or if you are going to have surgery.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Use only if a doctor advises it, with monitoring of the baby.
Interactions
Verapamil and diltiazem can slow the heart too much. Other blood pressure medicines, amiodarone, digoxin and some antidepressants add to its effects. Painkillers like ibuprofen can reduce its effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
