About the Medicine

Black Seed Oil [Nigella Sativa]

Indications

Black seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa (kalonji). It is traditionally used as a general health tonic and to support digestion, breathing, immunity and joint comfort. It is also sold as a supplement for people interested in support for cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for any disease.

How It Works

The oil contains thymoquinone and other natural compounds that have shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. Small human studies suggest modest effects on cholesterol and blood sugar, but results are not consistent and more research is needed.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Capsules or oil are usually taken with or after food. Do not exceed the stated dose and do not use it in place of medicines prescribed by your doctor.

Interactions

  • It may add to the effect of diabetes medicines (such as Metformin, Insulin) and blood pressure medicines, causing low blood sugar or low blood pressure.
  • It may increase the risk of bleeding with Warfarin, Clopidogrel or Aspirin.
  • It may cause extra drowsiness with sedative medicines.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Nigella sativa or any ingredient.
  • Within 2 weeks before planned surgery, because of possible effects on bleeding and blood sugar.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated in food amounts. Supplements may cause stomach upset, nausea, bloating or constipation. Applied to the skin, it can cause an allergic rash.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), symptoms of very low blood sugar (shaking, sweating, confusion), or unusual bleeding.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Black seed in normal food amounts is likely safe, but medicinal amounts are not recommended in pregnancy because they may affect the womb. Safety during breastfeeding is not well established; ask your doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

  • People with diabetes, low blood pressure or bleeding disorders should check their readings and speak to their doctor.
  • Not recommended for children unless advised by a doctor.
  • Herbal products can vary in quality; buy from a trusted source.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause stomach upset, low blood sugar or low blood pressure. Stop taking it and contact a doctor if you feel unwell.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal supplement (Unani and traditional herbal preparation).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
