Brahmi Rasayan
Indications
Brahmi Rasayan is a traditional Ayurvedic preparation based on Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), a small creeping herb, usually combined with other herbs and a sweet base. It is traditionally used as a brain tonic to support memory, concentration and learning, and to ease mental tiredness, nervousness and poor sleep. Some studies suggest Bacopa may modestly improve memory over several weeks, but evidence is limited, and it does not treat dementia, epilepsy, depression or other illnesses of the brain.
How It Works
Bacopa contains natural compounds called bacosides. These are thought to protect nerve cells from damage, support the chemical messengers that nerve cells use to communicate, and have a mild calming effect. Any benefit usually builds up slowly over several weeks of regular use.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. Taking it with or after food can reduce stomach upset. Do not give to children unless a practitioner advises it.
Interactions
Bacopa may add to the effect of sleeping pills, sedatives and other medicines that cause drowsiness. It may also interact with thyroid medicines, medicines for Alzheimer disease such as Donepezil, and medicines that affect heart rate. The sweet base can affect blood sugar in people with diabetes. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Brahmi or any ingredient.
- Slow heartbeat, unless a doctor advises it.
- Active stomach ulcer, unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include nausea, stomach cramps, loose stools, dry mouth, tiredness and, rarely, skin rash.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, fainting, a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or severe stomach pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it unless a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
Sudden or worsening memory loss, confusion, fits, or ongoing low mood need a doctor, not only a herbal tonic. People with thyroid disease, asthma, lung disease, a slow heart rate or diabetes should talk to a doctor first. It may cause drowsiness in some people, so take care when driving.
Overdose
Taking much more than the label amount may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea, drowsiness and a slow heartbeat. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
