About the Medicine

Lyophilized Bacterial Lysates

Indications

Lyophilized Bacterial Lysates are oral immune-stimulating products used to help prevent repeated infections. Products made for the airways are used to reduce how often adults and children get recurrent respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis and ear infections, and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. Products made for the urinary tract are used to help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections. They are not used to treat an acute infection on their own.

How It Works

The product contains freeze-dried (lyophilised) extracts of common bacteria that cause infections, broken down so they cannot cause disease. When taken by mouth or under the tongue, these fragments stimulate immune cells in the lining of the gut and mouth. This trains the immune system to respond faster and produce more protective antibodies, which may reduce the number and severity of later infections.

Dosage and Administration

Take as prescribed or as directed on the label, because schedules differ between products. Typically one capsule or tablet is taken each morning on an empty stomach for a set number of days each month (for example 10 days a month for 3 months for respiratory products), or daily for a longer first course for urinary products. Children's strengths and forms are available; for young children capsules may be opened and mixed with a drink. Sublingual tablets are dissolved under the tongue.

Interactions

No important interactions are known. It can be taken alongside antibiotics if needed. Medicines that suppress the immune system may reduce its effect. Tell your doctor about all medicines.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to any component. It is generally not used in people with autoimmune diseases or severe immune system disorders without specialist advice, or in infants younger than the age stated on the product.

Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, cough and skin rash or itching. Fever may occasionally occur.

Stop taking it and get urgent medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, or if you have a persistent high fever or severe skin reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough information on safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is best avoided unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

It is a preventive product and does not replace antibiotics or other treatment for an acute infection. If you develop a fever or infection during the course, see your doctor. Stop and seek advice if skin reactions, persistent stomach problems or breathing problems occur. Follow the full monthly schedule for the best effect.

Overdose

No serious overdose effects are known. Taking too much may cause stomach upset. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken, especially by a child.
