About the Medicine

Ambroxol Hydrochloride

What It Is Used For

Ambroxol loosens thick mucus (phlegm) so it is easier to cough up. It is used for a chesty, productive cough in colds, bronchitis and other chest conditions.

How to Take It

Adults and children over 12: usually 30 mg two or three times a day after food. Syrup for children: as the pack or your doctor says, by age or weight. Drink plenty of water while taking it.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to Ambroxol or Bromhexine.

Side Effects

Mild nausea, stomach upset, a change in taste or a dry mouth. Rarely, a serious skin reaction can happen; stop taking it and see a doctor at once if a rash, blisters or sores in the mouth appear.

Precautions

Do not give it with a cough suppressant (such as Dextromethorphan) at the same time, as the loosened mucus needs to be coughed up. Take care with a stomach ulcer, or liver or kidney disease. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than 2 weeks, or comes with high fever, breathlessness or blood.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Not recommended in the first 3 months of pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.

Interactions

It can increase the amount of some antibiotics (such as Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime and Erythromycin) reaching the lungs; this is not harmful. Avoid taking it together with cough suppressants.

Storage

Store below 30°C, out of the reach of children.
