About the Medicine

Salbutamol

What It Is Used For

Salbutamol (also called albuterol) quickly opens the airways. It is the usual "reliever" for wheezing and breathlessness in asthma and COPD, and is also used before exercise to prevent wheeze.

How to Take It

Inhaler: 1 to 2 puffs (100 to 200 micrograms) when needed, up to 4 times a day. Nebuliser: 2.5 mg to 5 mg as the doctor sets. Tablets or syrup are sometimes used, usually 2 mg to 4 mg three to four times a day for adults. If you need your reliever more than usual, or it does not help, your asthma is not controlled: see a doctor. In a severe attack, get emergency help.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not use it if you are allergic to salbutamol.

Side Effects

Common: shaking hands, fast or pounding heartbeat, headache, nervousness and muscle cramps. High doses can lower blood potassium.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, an overactive thyroid, high blood pressure or diabetes. Learn the correct inhaler technique; a spacer helps children and many adults.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The inhaler is commonly used in pregnancy when needed. Asthma should stay controlled; ask your doctor.

Interactions

Beta-blockers such as propranolol can block its effect and may worsen asthma. Diuretics, steroids and theophylline can add to the fall in potassium.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
