Alcaftadine
Indications
Alcaftadine eye drops are used to prevent and relieve itching of the eyes caused by allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergy), for example from pollen, dust, mould or pet dander.
How It Works
Alcaftadine blocks histamine, a chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes itching and redness. It also helps steady mast cells so they release less histamine. Relief usually starts within minutes and lasts about a day.
Dosage and Administration
For adults and children aged 2 years and over, put one drop in each affected eye once a day, or as prescribed. Wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid and place one drop. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface. Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 10 minutes before putting them back. Do not wear contact lenses if your eyes are red.
Interactions
No important interactions are known. If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between them.
Contraindications
- Allergy to alcaftadine or any ingredient, including the preservative
Side Effects
The most common effects are brief stinging or burning, eye irritation, redness and itching on putting in the drops. Headache and a stuffy or runny nose can occur.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or eyelids, trouble breathing, severe eye pain, or a sudden change in vision.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little reaches the blood after use in the eye, but there is limited information in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
For use in the eye only. See a doctor if the eye is painful, sticky with pus, or if vision changes, as these are not usual signs of allergy. Do not use for eye irritation from contact lenses. Do not share your drops.
Overdose
Using extra drops is unlikely to cause harm; rinse the eye with clean water. If swallowed, seek medical advice.
