About the Medicine

Calcium Pantothenate

Indications

Calcium Pantothenate (a form of vitamin B5, pantothenic acid) is used to prevent and treat vitamin B5 deficiency, which is rare and usually happens alongside other B vitamin deficiencies from poor diet or alcohol use. It is a common part of B-complex, multivitamin and hair, skin and nail supplements.

How It Works

Pantothenic acid is used by the body to make coenzyme A, which is needed to release energy from food and to make fats, hormones and other important substances.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: the daily need is about 5 mg, which a normal diet usually provides. As a supplement, commonly 5 to 50 mg a day, or as stated on the label or advised by the doctor. Take by mouth with or without food. Children: as prescribed.

Interactions

No important interactions are known at usual doses. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines and supplements you take, as combined vitamin products may already contain it.

Contraindications

Allergy to calcium pantothenate or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Very large doses may cause mild stomach upset or diarrhoea.

Get urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safe at normal recommended amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid high-dose supplements unless a doctor advises them.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Check the labels of all vitamin products you use to avoid taking the same ingredient twice.
  • Vitamins do not replace a balanced diet; see a doctor if symptoms such as tiredness, numbness or burning feet continue.

Overdose

Serious harm is unlikely. Very large amounts may cause diarrhoea; stop taking it and seek medical advice if symptoms are troublesome.

Therapeutic Class

Vitamin B (water-soluble vitamin).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
