Calcium Orotate
Indications
Calcium orotate is a calcium supplement. It is used to prevent and treat calcium deficiency and to support bone health in osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), osteomalacia and rickets, usually together with vitamin D. It is also used when the body needs extra calcium, such as during pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood growth and older age.
How It Works
It supplies calcium joined to orotic acid. Calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth and for the normal working of nerves, muscles and the heart.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: usually 1 tablet once or twice a day, or as directed by the doctor or the product label. Take with or after food with a glass of water. Children: only as prescribed. Do not take more than the recommended dose.
Interactions
Calcium can reduce the absorption of some medicines, including Tetracycline and Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin and other quinolone antibiotics, Levothyroxine, Alendronate and other bisphosphonates, and Iron. Take these at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after calcium, or as the leaflet of that medicine advises. Thiazide diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide can raise blood calcium. High calcium levels increase the risk of side effects from Digoxin.
Contraindications
- High blood calcium (hypercalcaemia) or high urine calcium.
- Calcium kidney stones.
- Severe kidney disease.
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Constipation, bloating, wind, nausea or stomach upset may occur. Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing) or signs of high blood calcium, such as severe thirst, passing a lot of urine, vomiting, confusion, muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Calcium supplements are commonly used during pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended doses. Take only the dose your doctor advises, especially if you also take other calcium or vitamin D products.
Precautions and Warnings
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, a history of kidney stones, sarcoidosis or heart disease. Do not combine several calcium or vitamin D products without advice. Long-term use may need blood calcium checks.
Overdose
Too much calcium can cause high blood calcium, with nausea, vomiting, thirst, constipation, confusion and an irregular heartbeat. Stop taking it and seek medical help.
