About the Medicine

Lornoxicam

Indications

Lornoxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and swelling. It is used for:

  • Short-term relief of mild to moderate pain, such as after surgery or dental treatment
  • Pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis
  • Pain and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis

How It Works

It blocks enzymes called cyclo-oxygenases (COX), which the body uses to make prostaglandins. Prostaglandins cause pain, swelling and fever, so lowering them eases these symptoms.

Dosage and Administration

Adults (tablets):

  • Acute pain: usually 8 mg two times a day. Do not take more than 16 mg in a day unless a doctor advises it.
  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis: usually 12 mg a day, divided into two or three doses. The maximum is 16 mg a day.

Swallow with a glass of water; taking it with food can reduce stomach upset. Use the lowest dose that works for the shortest time. The injection form is given by a doctor or nurse. It is not recommended for children and teenagers under 18 years.

Interactions

  • Other NSAIDs, including Aspirin, and corticosteroids such as Prednisolone increase the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding.
  • Blood thinners (Warfarin, Clopidogrel) and antidepressants such as Fluoxetine and Sertraline increase bleeding risk.
  • It can weaken blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors such as Enalapril, ARBs such as Losartan, diuretics) and, with them, can harm the kidneys.
  • It can raise blood levels of Lithium, Methotrexate and Digoxin.
  • Cimetidine can raise Lornoxicam levels.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Lornoxicam or any other NSAID, including asthma, hives or runny nose triggered by Aspirin or other painkillers
  • Current or past stomach or duodenal ulcer, or bleeding from the stomach or bowel
  • Severe heart failure
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • Bleeding disorders
  • The last three months of pregnancy
  • Children and teenagers under 18 years

Side Effects

Common: indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness.

Stop taking it and get urgent medical help if you notice:

  • Black or tarry stools, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, or severe stomach pain
  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain, sudden weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech
  • Blistering or peeling skin
  • Much less urine than usual or swelling of the legs
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy unless a doctor advises it, especially from 20 weeks, as it may affect the baby's kidneys and heart. It must not be used in the last three months of pregnancy. It may make it harder to become pregnant. It is not recommended while breastfeeding; ask the doctor about a safer painkiller.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Like other NSAIDs, it may slightly raise the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially at high doses or with long use.
  • Use with care if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, kidney or liver problems, or a history of stomach problems.
  • Older people are more likely to have side effects, especially stomach bleeding.
  • Drink enough fluids; dehydration increases the risk of kidney problems.
  • It may cause dizziness; do not drive if affected.

Overdose

Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness and dizziness. Rarely, stomach bleeding, kidney problems or fits can occur. Get medical help straight away.
