About the Medicine

Iota-Carrageenan

Indications

Iota-Carrageenan is a natural substance taken from red seaweed. It is mainly used as a nasal spray (and sometimes as a throat spray or lozenge) at the first signs of a common cold, to help shorten the illness and ease symptoms such as a runny or blocked nose and sneezing. It may also be used to help protect the nose from cold viruses during times of exposure. Studies show a modest benefit for colds caused by some viruses; it is not a treatment for flu, sinus infection or allergies.

How It Works

Iota-Carrageenan forms a thin, protective gel layer over the lining of the nose. This layer traps virus particles and stops them from attaching to and entering the cells of the nose, so the virus cannot multiply as easily. It works physically, on the surface, and is not absorbed into the body.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label, usually one or two sprays into each nostril about three times a day, starting as soon as cold symptoms begin and continuing for several days. Blow the nose gently before use. Keep the head upright and breathe in gently while spraying. Do not share the spray bottle with others.

Interactions

  • No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known.
  • If you use other nasal sprays (for example steroid or decongestant sprays), leave a gap of several minutes between sprays.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to carrageenan or any ingredient of the spray.
  • Use in young children only if the product label allows it for their age.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Mild nose irritation, a burning or tingling feeling, sneezing or a bad taste may occur.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if you develop high fever, severe facial pain, ear pain or breathing problems.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Because it acts locally and is not absorbed, it is generally considered suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Still, check with your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Precautions and Warnings

  • It works best when started early in a cold.
  • See a doctor if symptoms last more than 7 to 10 days, worsen, or include high fever, thick coloured mucus with facial pain, or shortness of breath.
  • It does not replace vaccines or medical treatment for influenza or COVID-19.
  • Keep the nozzle clean and use the bottle only for the time stated after opening.

Overdose

Overdose is very unlikely to be harmful because it is not absorbed. Using too much may cause more nasal irritation. If swallowed in large amounts, mild stomach upset may occur.

Therapeutic Class

Antiviral barrier nasal spray (medical device for the common cold).

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze. Use within the period stated on the pack after first opening.
