About the Medicine

Arjunarista

Indications

Arjunarista is a traditional Ayurvedic liquid preparation made by naturally fermenting the bark of the Arjuna tree (Terminalia arjuna) with other herbs and jaggery or sugar. It is traditionally used as a heart tonic, for palpitations, mild chest discomfort, high blood pressure support and general weakness. Some studies on Arjuna bark suggest a mild benefit for heart function, but scientific evidence is limited, and it must not replace prescribed heart medicines.

How It Works

Arjuna bark contains plant compounds such as flavonoids, tannins and arjunolic acid. These are thought to act as antioxidants, support the heart muscle, slightly lower blood pressure and blood fats, and improve blood flow. The fermentation process extracts these compounds and produces a small amount of natural alcohol.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. It is usually taken twice a day after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Interactions

It may add to the effect of heart and blood pressure medicines (for example Amlodipine, beta blockers), Digoxin, blood thinners such as Warfarin or Aspirin, and diabetes medicines. Because it contains some alcohol, avoid it with Metronidazole and sedatives. Tell your doctor before using it with any heart medicine.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Children
  • People who must avoid alcohol (for example liver disease or alcohol dependence)

Side Effects

Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea, constipation, headache and dizziness, especially if blood pressure drops.

Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, a very fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, or swelling of the face and difficulty breathing. Chest pain should never be treated with herbal products alone.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because of the natural alcohol content and lack of safety data.

Precautions and Warnings

Heart disease needs medical care; do not stop or change prescribed heart medicines. People with diabetes should note the sugar content. Avoid driving if you feel dizzy. Tell your doctor about low blood pressure, liver disease or planned surgery.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause low blood pressure, dizziness, stomach upset and effects of alcohol. Seek medical help.

Therapeutic Class
