Caridol

Indications

Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant used for short term relief of pain and stiffness from acute muscle and joint problems, such as back strain or sprains. It is used together with rest, physiotherapy and other measures, usually for no more than 2 to 3 weeks.

How It Works

Carisoprodol acts on the brain and spinal cord rather than directly on the muscles. It has a calming, sedative effect that reduces the sensation of pain and muscle spasm. In the body part of it is changed into Meprobamate, an anti anxiety substance that adds to the sedation and can cause dependence.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 250 to 350 mg three times a day and at bedtime. Use the lowest dose that works and for the shortest time, generally no longer than 2 to 3 weeks. Swallow with water, with or without food. Not for children under 16 years.

Interactions

• Alcohol, opioid pain relievers, benzodiazepines, sleeping tablets, sedating antihistamines and other sedatives greatly increase drowsiness and the risk of slowed breathing.
• Omeprazole, Fluvoxamine and some other medicines may raise Carisoprodol levels.
• Rifampicin and St John's Wort may lower its levels.

Contraindications

• Allergy to Carisoprodol or Meprobamate.
• Acute intermittent porphyria.

Side Effects

Common effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, unsteadiness and stomach upset. Some people feel restless, irritable or have a fast heartbeat.

Get urgent medical help if you have very slow or difficult breathing, extreme sleepiness, fainting, fits, severe weakness, confusion, swelling of the face or throat, or a serious skin reaction. Withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, shaking, sleeplessness and fits can occur if it is stopped suddenly after regular use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy is not established; use only if the doctor considers it necessary. It passes into breast milk in high amounts and may make the baby sleepy; it is best avoided while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

• It can be habit forming; take only as prescribed and do not share it.
• Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Use with care in liver or kidney disease, older people and people with a history of drug misuse.

Overdose

Overdose can cause deep sleep, slowed breathing, low blood pressure, fits and coma, especially with alcohol or other sedatives. Call for emergency help immediately.
