Vinpocetine
Indications
Vinpocetine is used in some countries to help problems linked to poor blood flow in the brain, such as:
- memory and concentration problems in older people caused by reduced blood supply to the brain;
- recovery after a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel (not a bleed);
- dizziness and ringing in the ears linked to poor circulation.
The evidence for these uses is limited, and it should be used only on a doctor's advice.
How It Works
Vinpocetine is made from vincamine, a substance found in the lesser periwinkle plant. It is thought to widen small blood vessels in the brain, improve blood flow and help brain cells use oxygen and glucose.
Dosage and Administration
Tablets, adults: usually 5 mg to 10 mg three times a day after meals. Do not take more than 30 mg in a day. Treatment is usually reviewed after a few weeks.
Injection: given as a slow drip into a vein in hospital by a doctor or nurse, as prescribed. It is never given as a quick injection.
Children: not for use.
Interactions
- Blood thinners and antiplatelet medicines (such as Warfarin, Aspirin or Clopidogrel): possible higher risk of bleeding.
- Blood pressure medicines: blood pressure may fall further.
- Medicines that affect heart rhythm: extra care is needed.
Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take.

Pregnancy and Lactation
