About the Medicine

Ciclopirox Olamine

Indications

Ciclopirox Olamine is an antifungal medicine applied to the skin or nails. As a cream, solution or shampoo it treats fungal skin infections such as ringworm of the body, groin (jock itch) and feet (athlete's foot), candida (yeast) infections of the skin, pityriasis versicolor (pale or dark patches) and seborrhoeic dermatitis (scaly, itchy scalp). As a nail lacquer it treats mild to moderate fungal nail infection (onychomycosis).

How It Works

Ciclopirox binds to iron and other metal ions that fungi need for their enzymes. This disrupts energy production and the transport of nutrients into fungal cells, so the fungus stops growing and dies. It also has some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.

Dosage and Administration

  • Cream or solution: apply a thin layer to the affected skin and a little of the surrounding area twice a day, usually for 2 to 4 weeks, and continue for about 1 to 2 weeks after the skin clears.
  • Shampoo: use 2 to 3 times a week, leaving it on the scalp for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing, as directed on the label.
  • Nail lacquer: apply once a day (or as directed on the pack) to the affected nails; remove the build-up with alcohol once a week and trim the nails. Treatment usually lasts several months.

Wash and dry the area before use and wash your hands afterwards.

Interactions

No important interactions are expected with use on the skin or nails. Avoid applying other creams or nail products on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Ciclopirox or any ingredient in the product.

Side Effects

  • Mild burning, itching or redness where applied
  • Skin irritation or dryness
  • Redness around the nail with nail lacquer
  • Rarely, allergic contact dermatitis (itchy rash)

Get urgent medical help if you notice blistering, swelling, severe rash, or swelling of the face and difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Only small amounts are absorbed through the skin, but information in pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited. Use only if a doctor advises it. Do not apply to the breast area when breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, mouth and inside of the nose. Do not cover the area with tight dressings unless advised. Nail lacquer is flammable; keep it away from flames. People with diabetes or poor circulation should see a doctor for nail infections. See a doctor if there is no improvement after 4 weeks of skin treatment.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely with use on the skin. If swallowed, contact a doctor or poison centre for advice.

Therapeutic Class

Topical antifungal (hydroxypyridone type).

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and heat, and out of the reach of children. Keep nail lacquer tightly closed.
