About the Medicine

Coconut

Indications

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is used as an ingredient in some Unani and Ayurvedic tonic preparations, usually together with nuts, seeds and other herbs. In these traditional formulas it is used as a nourishing tonic for general weakness, to support strength and vitality, and as a base that adds energy and flavour. Coconut oil is also used on the skin and hair as a moisturiser. Scientific evidence for the medicinal claims of tonic preparations is limited, and they are not a cure for any disease.

How It Works

Coconut flesh provides fats, fibre, carbohydrates and small amounts of minerals, so it adds calories and nourishment to a tonic. Coconut oil forms a protective layer on the skin and hair that reduces water loss. In traditional systems coconut is described as cooling and strengthening.

Dosage and Administration

Take tonic preparations as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner, usually once or twice daily. For skin or hair, apply coconut oil as needed.

Interactions

Coconut itself has no important medicine interactions. Combination tonics contain other herbs that may interact with medicines, so tell your doctor about any herbal product you use, especially if you take medicines for diabetes, blood pressure or blood thinning such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to coconut or any other ingredient of the preparation. People with diabetes should avoid sugary tonic pastes unless a doctor agrees.

Side Effects

  • Stomach upset or loose stools with large amounts
  • Weight gain with regular use of rich tonics
  • Rarely, allergic skin reactions

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Coconut as a food is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Combination tonics contain other herbs whose safety is not known, so ask a doctor before using them while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Coconut is high in saturated fat; people with high cholesterol or heart disease should not take large amounts regularly. Check the label of combination products for sugar and for herbs you should avoid. Do not use tonics in place of treatment for a diagnosed illness.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
