About the Medicine

Cranberry [Vaccinium Macrocarpon]

Indications

Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) extract is a supplement used to help reduce the chance of repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs), mainly in women who get them often. It does not treat an active infection; a UTI with symptoms needs to be checked by a doctor.

How It Works

Cranberries contain natural plant compounds called proanthocyanidins (PACs). These may stop bacteria such as E. coli from sticking to the inside wall of the bladder, so they are washed out with urine more easily.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 1 capsule (300 to 400 mg) once or twice a day, or as directed on the pack. Syrup: as directed on the pack. Swallow with water and drink plenty of fluids during the day. Benefit, if any, is seen with regular use over weeks. Children: only on a doctor's advice.

Interactions

Cranberry may increase the effect of Warfarin and raise the risk of bleeding; people taking Warfarin should avoid regular use or have INR checks as advised by their doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

Allergy to cranberry, related berries or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset or loose stools can occur, especially at higher amounts.

See a doctor promptly if you have UTI symptoms with fever, chills, pain in the back or side, blood in the urine or vomiting, as these may mean a kidney infection. Get urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Cranberry in food amounts is safe. There is limited information on concentrated supplements, so ask your doctor before using them while pregnant or breastfeeding. Any urine infection during pregnancy must be treated by a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

Cranberry is not a replacement for antibiotics. Use with care if you have had kidney stones, especially oxalate stones, or if you are allergic to Aspirin. Syrups may contain sugar, which matters for people with diabetes.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Stop taking it and seek advice if symptoms are troublesome.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal supplement for urinary tract health.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
