Marham Kharish
Indications
Marham Kharish is a traditional Unani ointment (marham means ointment, kharish means itching or scabies). It is traditionally used on the skin for:
- Itching and itchy rashes
- Scabies-like and other itchy skin eruptions
- Minor eczema, dry scaly patches and mild fungal-type itching
Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. Scabies is a mite infestation that is best treated with a proven anti-scabies medicine, and all close contacts usually need treatment at the same time, so see a doctor if scabies is suspected.
How It Works
Unani itch ointments generally combine herbal oils and extracts (often ingredients such as neem, sulphur-containing or camphor-like substances and soothing oils) in a greasy base. These are traditionally believed to soothe the skin, reduce itching, dry weeping areas and discourage germs and mites. The exact ingredients vary between makers, so check the pack.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Usually, wash and dry the affected skin, then apply a thin layer once or twice daily and rub in gently. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are being treated. For external use only. Ask a doctor before using on children.
Interactions
No important interactions are known. Avoid applying other creams, ointments or strong soaps to the same area at the same time unless advised, as this may increase irritation.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient
- Broken, raw, infected or bleeding skin
- Near the eyes, inside the mouth or on other mucous membranes
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Burning, stinging or redness where applied
- Dryness or peeling of the skin
- Allergic contact rash
- Unpleasant smell or staining of clothes
Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop a spreading rash, blisters, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Ask a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, do not apply it to the breast or nipple area.
Precautions and Warnings
- If several family members are itchy, especially at night, scabies is likely: see a doctor for proper treatment and wash bedding and clothes in hot water.
- See a doctor if itching does not improve within 1 to 2 weeks, if the skin becomes infected (pus, crusts, fever), or if itching affects the whole body.
- Avoid contact with the eyes; rinse with water if this happens.
- Test on a small patch of skin first if you have sensitive skin.
Overdose
Applying too much may increase irritation; wash off the excess with mild soap and water. If swallowed, seek medical advice and take the pack with you.
