About the Medicine

Clobetasol Propionate

Indications

Clobetasol Propionate is a very strong corticosteroid (steroid) used on the skin and scalp for short periods to treat severe inflammatory skin conditions that have not improved with weaker steroids, such as:

  • Severe or stubborn eczema and dermatitis.
  • Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis).
  • Lichen planus, discoid lupus and other inflammatory skin diseases advised by a doctor.

How It Works

It reduces inflammation in the skin by calming the local immune response, which relieves redness, swelling, itching and scaling.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults: apply a thin layer to the affected skin once or twice a day and rub in gently. Use for the shortest time possible, usually not more than 4 weeks, and not more than 50 g of cream or ointment per week. Once the skin improves, the doctor may reduce use or switch to a milder steroid.
  • Do not use on the face, groin or armpits unless a doctor tells you to.
  • Children: not recommended unless prescribed by a specialist, and never for babies under 1 year.

Wash hands after applying, unless the hands are being treated. Do not cover with bandages unless advised.

Interactions

Interactions are uncommon with skin use. Medicines that strongly slow its breakdown, such as Ritonavir and Itraconazole, can increase the amount absorbed into the body and the risk of steroid side effects. Avoid using other steroid creams on the same area at the same time.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to clobetasol or any ingredient of the product.
  • Untreated skin infections caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses (such as cold sores, chickenpox, ringworm).
  • Rosacea, acne, and rash around the mouth (perioral dermatitis).
  • Itching around the anus or genitals without inflammation.
  • Babies under 1 year.

Side Effects

Burning, stinging or itching where applied. With longer use: thinning of the skin, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels, skin colour changes, acne, increased hair growth and easy bruising. Using large amounts or using it for a long time can be absorbed into the body and affect the adrenal glands, blood sugar and blood pressure. Stopping after long use can cause the skin to flare.

Get urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), a spreading skin infection, blurred vision or eye pain, or severe weakness and dizziness after stopping long-term use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use in pregnancy only if a doctor advises it, on small areas for short periods. During breastfeeding, use only if needed and never apply it to the breasts.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Keep away from the eyes; long use on the eyelids can cause glaucoma or cataract.
  • Do not use for longer than advised; stop gradually after long use as the doctor advises.
  • Take care with psoriasis, as stopping suddenly can sometimes cause a severe flare.
  • Do not smoke or go near open flames if large amounts are on the skin or clothing, as ointment-soaked fabric can catch fire easily.
  • See a doctor if the condition gets worse or does not improve within 2 to 4 weeks.

Overdose

Using too much for a long time can cause hormone effects such as Cushing's syndrome and suppression of the adrenal glands. Treatment should be reduced slowly under medical supervision. If swallowed, contact a doctor.
