About the Medicine

Hazmina

Indications

Hazmina is a Unani digestive preparation (hazm means digestion). It is traditionally used for indigestion, heaviness after meals, wind and bloating, loss of appetite, mild acidity and sluggish digestion. Scientific evidence for these traditional uses is limited.

How It Works

Preparations of this type usually combine digestive and carminative herbs and spices such as Ginger, Black Pepper, Cumin, Ajwain (carom seed), Fennel, Black Salt, Myrobalan (Harad) and Mint. These are thought to stimulate the flow of digestive juices, relax the bowel and help release trapped gas.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Digestive powders, tablets or syrups of this type are usually taken after meals, one to three times a day. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Interactions

No important interactions are well documented. Products containing salt may not suit people on a low-salt diet or taking medicines for blood pressure or heart failure. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Active stomach or duodenal ulcer, as spicy ingredients may worsen pain.
  • Pregnancy, unless a doctor advises.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people may get heartburn, a burning feeling in the stomach, or loose stools. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe or persistent abdominal pain, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, black tarry stools, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or signs of allergy such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Use only on a doctor's advice.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Indigestion that keeps coming back, especially after age 45, needs a doctor's check.
  • Check the label for salt or sugar if you have high blood pressure, kidney disease or diabetes.
  • Use in children only on a practitioner's advice.

Taking too much may cause heartburn, stomach irritation or diarrhoea. Stop the product and seek medical advice if symptoms are troublesome.
