About the Medicine

Sharbat Dimaghi

Indications

Sharbat Dimaghi is a Unani herbal syrup whose name means a syrup for the brain (dimagh). It is traditionally used as a brain and nerve tonic for mental tiredness, poor concentration and memory, headache linked to stress or fatigue, restlessness and difficulty sleeping. The exact herbs differ between makers, so check the ingredient list on the label. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a treatment for serious memory loss, depression or other mental illness.

How It Works

Unani brain tonics usually combine herbs and seeds that are traditionally believed to calm and nourish the brain and nerves, such as Brahmi (Bacopa), Gotu kola, rose, violet, almonds or pumpkin seeds, in a sugar syrup. In Unani theory these balance the temperament of the brain. Some of these herbs have shown mild calming or memory effects in small studies, but the effect of the whole syrup has not been well tested.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually two or three times a day, on its own or mixed in water. Children should take a smaller dose only as stated on the label or by a practitioner. Shake well before use if the label says so.

Interactions

  • Some brain tonic herbs may add to the effect of sedative or sleep medicines, such as Diazepam or Clonazepam.
  • The syrup contains sugar; people taking diabetes medicines should check their blood sugar.
  • Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take, especially if you take medicines for epilepsy, depression or thyroid disease.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient (check the label, for example for nuts).
  • People with diabetes should avoid sugar-based syrups or use them only on a doctor's advice.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea, loose stools, drowsiness and, rarely, allergic skin rash.

Get urgent medical help if there is sudden confusion, severe headache, weakness of one side of the body, a fit, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of this syrup in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Use only if a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Ongoing memory problems, poor school performance, low mood, anxiety or sleeplessness can have medical causes; see a doctor rather than relying only on a tonic.
  • If it makes you drowsy, do not drive or use machines.
  • The sugar content can harm teeth; rinse the mouth after use.
  • Buy only from trusted, licensed makers.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely to be serious but may cause stomach upset, drowsiness and a rise in blood sugar in people with diabetes. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken or a child seems unwell.
