About the Medicine

Loratadine

What It Is Used For

Loratadine is an antihistamine that usually does not make people sleepy. It relieves sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes (allergic rhinitis) and itchy skin rashes and hives.

How to Take It

Adults and children over 12 years: 10 mg once a day. Children 2 to 12 years: 5 mg once a day if they weigh 30 kg or less, 10 mg if they weigh more, usually as syrup. People with severe liver disease may need a lower dose.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to Loratadine or Desloratadine. It is not for children under 2 unless a doctor advises it.

Side Effects

Usually mild: headache, tiredness, dry mouth and stomach upset. A few people still feel sleepy.

Precautions

See how it affects you before driving. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease. Stop it a few days before an allergy skin test.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Use only if a doctor advises it.

Interactions

Few important ones. Ketoconazole, Erythromycin and Cimetidine can raise its level slightly.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
