About the Medicine

What It Is Used For

Amlodipine relaxes and widens blood vessels. It is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent chest pain (angina).

How to Take It

Usually 5 mg once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food. The doctor may increase it to 10 mg. Keep taking it even if you feel well; do not stop without asking your doctor.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to amlodipine, have very low blood pressure or shock, or have a severe narrowing of the heart valve (aortic stenosis).

Side Effects

Common: swelling of the ankles, flushing, headache, dizziness, tiredness, palpitations and nausea. Ankle swelling is the most common and is not usually dangerous, but tell your doctor if it bothers you.

Precautions

Stand up slowly if you feel dizzy. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or heart failure.
