About the Medicine

Pidotimod

Indications

Pidotimod is an immune-supporting medicine used to help reduce the number of repeated respiratory infections, such as recurrent colds, sore throats, tonsillitis, ear infections and bronchitis, mainly in children and adults whose defences are weak. It may also be used alongside antibiotics during an infection. Evidence for its benefit is moderate, and it does not replace vaccines or antibiotics when these are needed.

How It Works

Pidotimod is a synthetic substance that stimulates both the first-line (innate) and the acquired immune system. It helps white blood cells mature and work better, increases natural killer cell activity and supports the production of protective antibodies in the lining of the airways, so the body can fight off germs more effectively.

Dosage and Administration

The usual adult dose is 800 mg once or twice daily during an infection, then 800 mg once daily for prevention, usually for up to 60 days, or as prescribed. For children the dose is set by the doctor (commonly 400 mg once or twice daily). Take it on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours away from meals. Oral solution or sachets can be taken directly or mixed with a little water.

Interactions

No major interactions are well known. It is often used together with antibiotics. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially other immune-modifying medicines such as steroids or Ciclosporin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Pidotimod or any ingredient of the product.
  • Children under 3 years of age unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Side Effects

Pidotimod is usually well tolerated. Occasional effects include nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and skin rash or itching.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, which may signal a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid use unless your doctor considers it clearly necessary.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with care in people with autoimmune disease or allergic conditions and in those with poor kidney function. If the infection worsens or does not improve, see a doctor, as antibiotics or other treatment may be needed. Do not use it as a substitute for routine vaccination.

Overdose

There is little experience of overdose. If a large amount is taken, contact a doctor; treatment is supportive.
