About the Medicine

Aushokarist [Saraca Indica]

Indications

Ashokarishta is a traditional Ayurvedic liquid preparation made mainly from the bark of the Ashoka tree (Saraca indica, also called Saraca asoca) together with other herbs, fermented to form an arishta (a naturally fermented herbal liquid). It is traditionally used to support women's reproductive health, for example heavy or painful periods, irregular cycles, white vaginal discharge (leucorrhoea) and weakness linked to menstrual problems. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not replace a medical check of abnormal bleeding.

How It Works

Ashoka bark contains tannins, flavonoids and other plant compounds that are thought to have an astringent effect (tightening tissues and reducing bleeding) and a mild soothing effect on the womb (uterus). How the whole preparation works has not been clearly established.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. Arishtas are usually taken after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water. Shake the bottle before use and measure each dose with the cup or spoon provided.

Interactions

Ashokarishta contains a small amount of alcohol formed during fermentation, so avoid taking it with Metronidazole, Tinidazole or other medicines that react with alcohol, and with sleeping tablets or sedatives. Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners such as Warfarin, hormone treatments or medicines for diabetes, as herbal products may affect them.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy.
  • Allergy to Ashoka or any other ingredient.
  • People who must avoid alcohol completely, including those recovering from alcohol dependence or with serious liver disease.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea, constipation or a burning feeling in the stomach. Allergic reactions such as rash or itching are uncommon.

Get urgent medical help if you have very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pain in the lower abdomen, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy, because of its possible effect on the womb and its alcohol content. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established, so avoid it unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Precautions and Warnings

Very heavy periods, bleeding between periods and any bleeding after menopause need a doctor's examination to rule out causes such as fibroids, infection or cancer. Arishtas contain alcohol and sugar, so people with diabetes or liver disease should ask a doctor first. Stop using it and see a doctor if symptoms do not improve.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset and, because of the alcohol, drowsiness. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, get medical advice promptly.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic herbal preparation (arishta) traditionally used for women's health.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
