About the Medicine

Kutajadi Kwath

Indications

Kutajadi Kwath is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal decoction (kwath means a liquid made by boiling herbs) based mainly on the bark of Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica, also called Holarrhena pubescens), often combined with other herbs. It is traditionally used for loose motions (diarrhoea), dysentery (diarrhoea with mucus or blood), stomach cramps and poor digestion. Scientific evidence is limited, and it is not a substitute for proper treatment of serious or infectious diarrhoea.

How It Works

Kutaja bark contains plant alkaloids such as conessine and tannins. These are thought to have an astringent effect that reduces watery stools, and some laboratory studies suggest activity against certain gut parasites such as amoeba. Its effects in people have not been well studied.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. Shake well before use and measure each dose with the cup or spoon provided. While you have diarrhoea, drink plenty of fluids and use oral rehydration salts (ORS) to replace lost water and salts.

Interactions

Astringent herbs may reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time, so take other medicines at least 2 hours apart. Tell your doctor if you take medicines for diabetes, heart rhythm or blood pressure, or blood thinners such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Kutaja or any other ingredient.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Severe diarrhoea with high fever, blood in the stool or signs of dehydration, which need a doctor first.
  • Young children, unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

Possible effects include constipation, nausea, a bitter taste and stomach discomfort. Large amounts of Kutaja alkaloids may cause dizziness or other unwanted effects.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of dehydration (very little urine, dry mouth, dizziness, sunken eyes), blood in the stool, high fever, severe abdominal pain, confusion, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as safety has not been established. Pregnant women with diarrhoea should see a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

Diarrhoea lasting more than 2 to 3 days, or any diarrhoea in infants, older people or people with weak immunity, needs medical advice. Do not use it for long periods. People with diabetes should check whether the product contains sugar.

Overdose

Too much may cause constipation, nausea, dizziness or other unwanted effects from the plant alkaloids. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, get medical advice promptly.
