About the Medicine

Aminocaproic Acid

Indications

Aminocaproic Acid is used to control serious bleeding caused by the too-rapid breakdown of blood clots (fibrinolysis). This can happen after heart or prostate surgery, in some blood disorders, after dental extraction in people with bleeding disorders such as haemophilia, and in some cases of heavy bleeding from the womb, bladder or other organs.

How It Works

When the body forms a clot, it also starts a process that slowly dissolves it. Aminocaproic Acid blocks plasminogen, the substance that becomes plasmin and breaks down clots. This keeps clots in place for longer and reduces bleeding.

Dosage and Administration

Given as prescribed. In hospital it is usually given as an infusion into a vein by a doctor or nurse, often followed by tablets or oral solution. The dose depends on the cause of bleeding, body weight and kidney function, and treatment is usually short. Take tablets exactly as directed and do not take extra doses.

Interactions

Using it with medicines that promote clotting, such as hormonal contraceptives, oestrogens, Tranexamic Acid or clotting factor concentrates, may increase the risk of dangerous blood clots. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

Do not use if there is active clotting inside blood vessels (such as deep vein thrombosis or disseminated intravascular coagulation without heparin treatment), or if you are allergic to Aminocaproic Acid. It is used with great caution in bleeding from the upper urinary tract, because clots can block the kidney tubes.

Side Effects

  • Nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhoea
  • Dizziness, headache, ringing in the ears
  • Stuffy nose, watery eyes
  • Low blood pressure, especially with fast injection
  • Muscle weakness or pain with long use
  • Skin rash

Get urgent medical help if you have pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain or sudden shortness of breath, sudden weakness or difficulty speaking, severe muscle pain with dark brown urine, little or no urine, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use in pregnancy only if the doctor considers it clearly needed. It is not known whether it passes into breast milk; ask your doctor before breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Used with care in heart, liver or kidney disease and in people at risk of blood clots. Muscle enzymes (CK) may be checked during longer treatment. The underlying cause of bleeding must be identified and treated.

Overdose

Overdose may cause low blood pressure, seizures, kidney problems and blood clots. Seek emergency medical help.

Therapeutic Class

Antifibrinolytic; haemostatic agent.

Storage

Tablets and oral solution: store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Injections: as directed on the pack.
