About the Medicine

Undenatured Type II Collagen

Indications

Undenatured type II collagen is a food supplement used to support joint comfort and mobility, mainly in people with osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis) of the knees or other joints, and sometimes in active people with joint stiffness. It is often combined with other joint ingredients such as Glucosamine, Chondroitin or Hyaluronic Acid. Research suggests it may modestly ease joint pain and stiffness, but it is not a painkiller and does not cure arthritis.

How It Works

It is usually taken from chicken breastbone cartilage and processed at low temperature so the collagen keeps its natural shape (undenatured). Taken in a very small daily amount, it is thought to work through the immune tissue of the gut, teaching the immune system to calm the inflammation that attacks joint cartilage. This is different from ordinary collagen powders, which are broken down and used as protein.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 40 mg once a day by mouth, or as written on the product label. Many products combine it with other ingredients, so follow the label of your product. It can be taken with or without food, at the same time each day. Benefits, if any, usually take 1 to 3 months to appear. It is not recommended for children unless a doctor advises.

Interactions

No important interactions are known for undenatured type II collagen itself. If your product also contains Glucosamine, Chondroitin or other ingredients, check with a pharmacist, especially if you take Warfarin or other blood thinners. Tell your doctor if you take medicines that suppress the immune system.

Contraindications

Do not take if you are allergic to chicken, eggs or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people have mild stomach upset, heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea or headache.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread itchy rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough information on safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so avoid it unless your doctor advises.

Precautions and Warnings

This is a supplement, not a medicine for sudden or severe joint pain. See a doctor if a joint is hot, red, very swollen, or if pain follows an injury or comes with fever. Do not stop medicines your doctor has prescribed for arthritis. If you have an autoimmune disease, ask your doctor before use.

Overdose

Taking more than the label amount is unlikely to cause serious harm but gives no extra benefit and may upset the stomach. If a large amount of a combination product is swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Food supplement for joint health (nutraceutical).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed.
