Sulphaquinoxaline
Indications
Sulphaquinoxaline is a veterinary medicine used in animals, mainly poultry, rabbits and some livestock, and is not for human use. It is used, often with Diaverdin or Pyrimethamine, to prevent and treat coccidiosis and some bacterial infections such as fowl cholera and fowl typhoid.
How It Works
Sulphaquinoxaline is a sulphonamide. It blocks the step where coccidia and bacteria use para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to make folic acid, so they cannot multiply. A diaminopyrimidine partner blocks a later step and makes the combination stronger.
Dosage and Administration
Given in drinking water or feed at the dose and for the number of days on the product label, or as advised by a veterinarian. Treatment is often given in short courses with rest days in between. Prepare medicated water fresh every day.
Interactions
- Avoid other sulphonamides at the same time.
- It can strengthen the effect of anticoagulant substances; avoid combining with products that affect blood clotting.
- Do not mix with other water medicines unless advised by a veterinarian.
Contraindications
- Not for human use.
- Laying hens producing eggs for human consumption.
- Animals with sulphonamide sensitivity, bleeding disorders, or severe liver or kidney disease.
Side Effects
Long courses or high doses can lower vitamin K activity, causing bleeding and anaemia, and may cause kidney damage, poor growth and reduced egg production.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if birds show bleeding, pale combs, weakness, stop drinking, or deaths increase. If a person swallows the product or reacts after handling it, seek medical help.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid handling the concentrate or wear gloves and a mask. Use in breeding or lactating animals only as advised by a veterinarian.
Precautions and Warnings
- Follow the label's withdrawal period before slaughter for food.
- Do not exceed the stated dose or treatment days.
- Give plenty of clean drinking water.
- Vitamin K supplementation may be advised by the veterinarian during longer use.
Overdose
Overdose can cause internal bleeding, kidney damage and death in birds. Stop the medicated water and contact a veterinarian.
