About the Medicine

Butenafine

Indications

Butenafine is an antifungal cream used on the skin to treat fungal infections such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), ringworm of the body (tinea corporis), jock itch in the groin (tinea cruris) and pityriasis (tinea) versicolor, which causes pale or dark patches.

How It Works

Butenafine blocks an enzyme called squalene epoxidase that fungi need to build their cell walls. This stops the fungus from growing and also causes a toxic substance to build up inside it, killing it. It stays in the skin for some time after application, so short courses are often effective.

Dosage and Administration

For adults and children over 12 years: wash and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer of 1% cream to cover the affected skin and a small area around it. For athlete's foot, apply twice a day for 7 days or once a day for 4 weeks; for ringworm, jock itch and tinea versicolor, apply once a day for 2 weeks; or use as directed by a doctor or the label. Wash hands after use. Continue for the full course even if the skin looks better.

Interactions

No significant interactions with other medicines are known. Avoid applying other skin products to the same area at the same time unless advised.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to butenafine or any ingredient of the cream.
  • Not for use in the eyes, mouth, nose or vagina.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people get mild burning, stinging, itching, redness or irritation where it is applied.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if there is blistering, swelling, oozing or a widespread rash, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Very little is absorbed through the skin, but safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully studied. Use only if a doctor advises it, and do not apply to the breast area while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only.
  • Keep the area clean and dry; change socks and underwear daily and do not share towels.
  • Do not cover with tight or airtight bandages unless advised.
  • See a doctor if there is no improvement after the treatment period, or for nail or scalp infections, which need different treatment.
  • Not recommended for children under 12 without medical advice.

Overdose

Overuse on the skin may cause irritation. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and seek medical advice.
